Journaling is a great way to express yourself by keeping your thoughts to yourself.  I use journaling to remember all the great things that happen in my life, because I know one of these days I will probably forget most of them.  An added touch to journaling is creating a beautiful journal to write in.  Here are a couple of DIY ideas to create your own, in-expensive journal.

Gold Laced Journal

Items Needed

1 Composition Book

2 – 12x12 pieces of scrapbook paper, your choice of color, I chose white and gold

Glue Dots

Stickers for date

Trace the pattern of the composition book onto the back side of the decorated paper and cut it out.  Using glue dots on each corner and a few in the middle, stick the decorated card stock to the outside of the composition book.  Decorate the outside with the stickers and you are ready to start writing in your journal.

Glitter Dot Journal

Items Needed

1 Composition Book

Deco Art Glitter Writer Paint

Printed Dots on Paper

(get the pattern on the website, or

make it yourself with a Microsoft Word )

Glue Dots

2 colors of ribbon, I used pink and black

Flowers or flower sticker

Create 1 inch black dots in Microsoft Word or use the template on this website.  Print the pattern on 2 pieces of 11 x 8 ½ white card stock.  Using the Americana Glitter Paint Writer, draw and fill in circles in the middle of the black printed circles, leave a black border (see picture).  Let this dry for at least 8 hours or until dry, you can speed up the drying process by using a hairdryer lightly over the paint after you have let the paint dry for at least an hour on its own.  Next trace the pattern of the composition book onto the back side of the decorated paper and cut it out.  Using glue dots on each corner and a few in the middle, stick the decorated card stock to the outside of the composition book.  Now cut the ribbon to the length from top to bottom of the front cover of the composition book.  Using the glue dots, stick the ribbon to the composition book cover, overlapping the ends of the ribbon and sticking them with the glue dots to the inside of the journal.  Finish it off with some floral stickers.  Now you are ready to start writing in your journal.

DIY Journal – Make it Your Own
Falling For Fall

Fall is my favorite time of the year, not just because the temperatures are so much nicer but because it reminds me that the holidays are just around the corner.  It doesn’t have to cost you a fortune to decorate for fall and you can use this décor for a few months right into Thanksgiving.  Here are a few easy DIY Fall Table Décor ideas to jazz up your home for the season.

Flower Pumpkin

Items Needed

1 Plastic Pumpkin (You can get this at Michael’s Arts & Crafts)

Deco Art metallic paint (color of your choice)

Sponge brush

Craft glue

Fall floral bush

Drill and drill bit

First you want to paint a thin coat onto the outside of the pumpkin with the metallic paint.  Don’t paint to thick; just lightly brush the paint on.  After the paint has dried start drilling your holes into the pumpkin where you would like to put your flowers.  Pick the tops of the flowers off of the bush and dip the tip into the glue and place it into one of the holes you have drilled.  Finish the pumpkin off with a design of your choice.

Fun Pumpkin Crafting

Decorating pumpkins are one of the funnist things to do when fall is here.  Whether you use glitter, twine, paper, or even metal, it is easy to DIY your pumpkins for the season.  Check out these how to videos for some easy pumpkin decorating fun.

All you need for this paper pumpkin is an old book, some decou page and glitter.  Cut the book into the shape of a pumpkin using an xacto knife.  Be sure to only cut a few pages at a time.  Then open the book to fan it out and using glue dots, glue the front cover to the back cover.  You book should look like a paper pumpkin.  Next, lightly coat the outside edges of the pages with decou page, use a sponge brush for easy application.  Then dip the edges in orange glitter and let dry for 24 hours. Roll a piece of brown paper up to make the stem and place it in the middle hole of the book.

DIY Halloween Costumes

Why pay a fortune at a Halloween store for your costume this year when you can create your own using items from around your house a few items from your local craft store.  It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to have a great Halloween costume, just remember to get creative and have fun.

Witches Shoes

Items Needed

A pair of old black heals

(if you don’t have one, go to Goodwill and get a pair)

Masking tape

Americana acrylic black paint

Americana Decou Page

Black glitter

Purple glitter

Plastic spider

Piece of cardboard

Hot glue gun

Tear off a strip of masking tape about 8 inches long and stick on end of it to the inside of the top of the shoe and drag it down past the toe and let it hang there.  Take another piece of tape and do the same thing.  Repeat this until you have about 6 pieces of tape on the front of the shoe.  Gather the tape at the end of the shoe up into a point and then wrap the point with another piece of tape until it stays up into a point like the tip of a witch’s shoe.  Paint the masking tape black and let dry for about 30 minutes.  In small sections, paint the decou page onto the whole shoe and poor black glitter on the shoe as you go.  Let dry overnight.  Cut a piece of cardboard into a square about 2”x2”.   Paint decou Page onto the outer edges of the cardboard and about ¼” in, and then pour purple glitter onto the painted areas.  Next paint decou page into the center of the square and cover with black glitter, let dry overnight.  You could also put glitter onto a plastic spider for more décor.  Once everything is dry, using the hot glue gun, glue the cardboard square onto the front of the shoe and then glue the spider onto the square.  Add the witch skirt and the witch hat for the full look.

Witch Skirt & Hat

Items Needed

4 yards of Black tulle

4 yards of Halloween decorative black tulle

Black Ribbon

White poster board

Americana acrylic black paint

Sponge brushes

Stapler

Glue gun

Masking tape

Americana Decou Page

Purple glitter

For the skirt, keep the tulle doubled up just how it came from the fabric store and cut the tulle into strips about 2 inches thick.  Take the strips and tie them to the ribbon by pulling the ends through the loop at the top of the doubled up tulle, (see picture).  Repeat this step using one black and then one decorative black.  Tie as many strips on as you will need to have the skirt go completely around you.  Be sure to leave enough ribbon on each end so that you can tie the skirt onto yourself.

For the hat, cut a large circle out of the poster board, about 18 – 24 inches.  Then cut another circle inside the big circle big enough for your head.  Next, take a second piece of poster board and make a cone out of it, use the stapler to hold the cone together and then cover the edges with masking tape.  Connect the cone to the inside circle on the other piece of poster board with masking tape and paint the whole hat black, be sure to paint both sides of the flat piece of poster board, let it dry at least 30 minutes.  Add some decorative glitter and spiders to match the shoes.

Create a Queen of hearts costume using these same steps and add some felt hearts and a decorative mask.

Witch Fingers

Items Needed

Snyders pretzel rods

Wilton melting pot

Wilton candy melts (your choice of colors, I used purple, orange, cocoa, yellow, etc.)

Wilton decorating bags

Wilton witch finger pretzel mold

Butter knife

This is a fun and easy DIY treat that you can create using the Wilton melting pot or you can melt the candy melts in your microwave, just follow the instructions on the bag.

To get started, you want to melt the color of candy melts that you would like to fill the mold with.  Use one color of melts for the fingernail and another color for the finger.  Add a little bit of the melted candy melts into the fingernail part of the mold and then fill half of the remaining mold with another color.  Place the pretzel rod into the mold and then fill the remainder of the mold with more melted candy.  Scrape the top of the mold with a butter knife to smooth it out.  Place the filled mold into the refrigerator for about an hour to harden.  The hardened treat should just pop out of the mold very easily.  As always, remember to get creative and have fun enjoying this yummy haunted treat

Ghostly Cupcakes

Items Needed

Cupcakes (you can make them or purchase undecorated cupcakes at your local store)

Brownie bites from your local store or you can bake brownie bites

Wilton Decorator Preferred Fondant in white and black

Wilton White Icing Pouch

This is a fun and easy DIY treat that you can create using already baked cupcakes and brownie bites or you can have fun baking cupcakes and brownie bites.  You could use some of the fun Wilton Halloween designed cupcake baking cups for a more decorated look.

Whether you have baked your own treats or have bought already baked and undecorated treats at the store, this is a really fun and easy Halloween treat.  Place the brownie bites onto a toothpick or lollypop stick.  Using the white icing pouch, cover the top of the brownie bite and the top of the cupcake.  Place the other end of the toothpick or lollypop stick into the cupcake and place them in the refrigerator for about an hour.  While the icing is hardening a bit, start to roll out your white fondant first, form it into a ball and then roll it until it is pretty thin but still easy to pick up off the counter or cutting board.  Roll the fondant into an 8-10 inch round circle.  Place the rolled fondant onto the cooled cupcake/brownie bite and push it in just enough to make it look like a ghost, you may need to cut a little bit off of the ends of the fondant.  Now roll out the black fondant and cut a mouth and eyes to place on the head of the ghost.  As always, remember to get creative and have fun enjoying this yummy haunted treat.

Christmas wrapping can look beautiful with just a few items from your local Container Store and craft store.  The gift giving doesn’t have to stop with what is inside the package because there are so many beautiful wrapping items to create the perfect gift.  It’s just as easy to create a stocking holder to hang your beautiful stockings on after you have filled them with all the Christmas goodies.

Wrapping Items Needed

Wrapping Paper (your choice)

Wired ribbon (to match paper)

Elfa Mesh Gift Wrapping Cart

Decorative Christmas floral pics

Pipe cleaners

Bowdabra

Hot glue gun

Scotch tape

It is very important when wrapping a gift that you pull the paper tight before you tape it.  Fold in the corners and press with your fingers for a nice seam.  Wrap the ribbon around the pacage in a cross pattern and tie it in the middle.  To make a bow, use your bowdabra and place the ribbon through the slot and press down, then make a loop and run the ribbon back through the slot.  Twist the ribbon and make another loop.  Follow these instructions to make four loops on each side.  For the tale of the bow, after you have made your loops pull the ribbon as long as you want your tails to be and cut it, then place the end of the ribbon back through the slot to make a bigger loop.   Pull the bow out and make a loop with the small end on the bottom for you top loop.  Tie a pipe cleaner through both loops and twist it to hold the bow together.  Spread your loops apart and fluff them.   Cut the big loop in the middle and make a decorative end by folding it in half and cut at an angle.  Hot glue the floral pics into the edges of the ribbon for an added touch.

Stocking Holder Items Needed

Wood from Lowe’s 2 ft long

Americana acrylic paint (Red, White, Green)

Deco Art paint writer (white, red, green)

Single prong robe hook (as many hooks as you

                                               have stockings)

Printed stencil

Sponge brushes

Small paint brush

Drill or screwdriver

Frame hook

Lowe’s will cut the wood for you for free if you do not have a way to cut it.  Paint the wood with 2 – 3 coats of Americana Acrylic paint, letting it dry at least 20 minutes in between coats.  To create a cute stencil, use a word program on your computer and make the font as big as you want it to be on your stocking holder.  Using the Deco Art paint writer, trace the stencil onto the wood.  Paint in the words with acrylic paint and the small paint brush.  You may have to paint 2 – 3 coats, let them dry at least 20 minutes in between coats.  Trace around the white letters with another color of paint writer.  Add a decorative touch to your wood using the end of a sponge brush and dip it in different colors of acrylic paint.  Seal the wood with an acrylic sealer.  Place a frame hook on the back of the plaque and then measure where the hooks will go on the front of the plaque and screw them into the wood.
